Crowd marketing is still useful, but the rules have changed. We look at which links have an effect and which only dilute your profile.

Crowd marketing is often seen as an outdated method. In fact, only mass comment spam with keyword anchors is outdated. Links from live discussions that bring people and read like advice still work.

What has changed

Search engines are better at telling natural mentions from artificial ones. Links from look-alike profiles, spam comments and abandoned threads pass almost no weight, and in large numbers they can hurt.

  • Links from threads with no replies and no traffic carry less weight
  • A large share of exact-match keywords looks unnatural
  • Forum moderators remove promotional posts faster than a few years ago

What works now

The best results come from meaningful replies in niche threads that already rank in search. Such a link gets clicks, and the discussion page keeps collecting traffic for years.

  • Threads with search traffic and recent activity
  • Replies that solve the author's question, with the link only adding to them
  • Branded and naked links as the core of the profile
  • A mix of forums, submission sites and directories for domain diversity
TipCheck the thread before posting: does it have messages from the last six months, and does it show up in search for the topic? If both answers are "no", look for another one.

How many links you need

There is no universal number. A new site usually needs 15–30 links a month spread across several site types. Consistency matters more: 20 links every month is better than 100 in a single week.

Conclusion

In 2026 crowd marketing works as part of a link building strategy, not as a replacement for it. It makes the profile more natural, brings targeted visitors and strengthens pages that are hard to get other links to.
